Rail freight car carrying tan military ambulance truck with red cross by green forest.

Built for the work that doesn’t stop.

Freight that moves itself

TugVolt is an autonomous, battery-electric freight railcar. We turn any traditional freight railcar into a TugVolt by upfitting it with motors, batteries, and an advanced perception system. The result is a railcar that moves itself.

Deploy it on your existing track, with your existing fleet, and start moving freight on day one. No new infrastructure and no new locomotives required.

TugVolts are in commercial service today, with best-in-class partners including Watco, R.J. Corman, and Carmeuse Americas.

For railroads

Switching and Local Service

TugVolt handles yard moves, industry switching, and short local runs without tying up a road locomotive or a full crew, so your power and people stay focused on the work they do best.

Independent Shuttles

Run dedicated point-to-point shuttle service across short corridors, transfer runs, and interchange lanes, without a locomotive. Underused track becomes a recurring revenue lane.

Distributed Power and Self-Sorting

Add TugVolts throughout a long train to distribute tractive effort across the consist. They push on grades, recapture braking energy on the downhill, and at destination the train sorts itself.

For Plants, Mines, and Shippers

Captive and Independent Moves

Move raw materials, work-in-progress inventory, and finished goods between facilities on your own track. With TugVolt, captive moves happen on demand, not when a locomotive becomes available.

Plant and Terminal Switching

TugVolt handles the repetitive switching moves inside plants, mills, and terminals, putting loaded and empty cars exactly where your operation needs them. No trackmobile, no rented switcher, and no downtime between moves.

Self-Sorting in Dedicated Service

If you run cars in dedicated unit train service with a railroad partner, TugVolt can self-sort the consist on arrival, cutting dwell time, and reducing switching costs. Cars route themselves to the right tracks, in the right order, ready for loading or unloading the moment they arrive.
